SpecialT: Book Review

SpecialT
Nine Lives—Nine Names
By S. Jenny Boyer

Are you a cat lover?  Do you have a favored cat, especially one that graces your life?  If you do, Boyer’s book is a must-read.

Boyer’s book is a memoir-type book about her very special cat which she called SpecialT.  He was worldly yet very gentle. He was a wonderful companion to her.  She traces the story from when she first saw SpecialT appear on her doorstep and how she knew that this older cat would be the pet who would grace her life always. And SpecialT did grace her life for many years to come.

Jesse, the dog, also loved SpecialT.  She was the first one to greet her as he came into their yard, and they were inseparable ever since. Jesse never liked other dogs, but she sure loved this cat. They became the best of buddies. They slept together, played together, and just hang around together. Then when Jesse got sick and died a few years later, it took SpecialT a long time to get over it. He even cried for his beloved companion. He looked all over the house for her, and he could hardly accept that she was gone forever.

Then another cat came into SpecialT’s life.  He also liked KK but not as much as Jesse.  SpecialT was KK’s mentor or king. So, he was the boss around the house. But then unfortunately SpecialT started getting weak and ill. Boyer’s account of the time leading to and including SpecialT’s death is heart wrenching.  But I could relate to how Boyer felt when SpecialT passed away. I also had a beloved cat for many years, and it took me a long time to stop weeping and grieving. I still haven’t gotten completely over the death of my beloved pet some three years later. And I don’t think I ever will either.

This is a book that will move the reader, especially a cat lover.  I loved it from beginning to end. Boyer does a splendid job of conveying the love and friendship that exist between cat and person. Sometimes, a pet does grace a life, and that pet cannot ever be fully replaced by another. Thank goodness for wonderful pets!
